The night I learned how to leave a room
I'm back in that hospital room, 1987, the rain ticking the window and a patient's hand going still in mine. I'd rehearsed the speech for weeks but instead I just watched the rooftops across the street, their wet tiles like scales, and said nothing. The coffee on the tray went cold, and he left the room before I did. I still practice that exit every morning.
