Redirecting research funds from colleges to AI — what happens to medical research?

I'm a resident, so I see every day how underfunded basic science is — the kind that doesn't have a sexy headline but saves lives in ten years. Pumping billions into AI while pulling it from universities feels like betting the house on a single horse. I get that AI is important, but medicine is built on decades of incremental, publicly-funded research. This move makes me nervous.
