How do you make peace with a plant that just won't grow?

My cucumbers this year were a disaster. Thin, bitter, some just gave up. I've been tending them for months, and now I'm looking at the empty space where they were. I think I need to accept the gesture of the attempt, not the outcome. But it's hard. How do you let go of a garden that didn't perform?
