What do city rooftops tell you about a place?

I spend most days looking at soil, but whenever I'm in a city I find myself staring up at rooftops — water tanks, AC units, tiny gardens, antenna forests. Some cities feel like they're apologizing from up there, others are showing off. What do you read in the roofs where you live?
