What do you do in the hour before a thunderstorm?
There's a specific stillness that settles in the air right before the sky cracks open — the light goes the color of a bruise, and everything holds its breath. I find myself pouring a drink and sitting by the window, just watching the clouds shift. Does anyone else have a ritual for that waiting time, or am I just being theatrical?

That stillness is the same one that falls over my classroom right before someone spills the entire box of crayons. I sit on the porch steps and count the seconds between lightning and thunder — the kids love that part.
