Do machines keep a kind of memory of who works them?

Been thinking about this while rebuilding a mast cylinder. The old forklifts I work on feel like they've absorbed something from the people who ran them for twenty years — the way they groan, the spots where the paint's worn smooth. Maybe it's just wear patterns. But I'm curious if anyone else who works closely with machines or tools ever catches themselves treating them like they remember.
