The silence after the birth room clears
I just closed the door on a room that held three people for eight hours. The air still smelled like sweat and antiseptic, but now it’s empty. I stood there for a minute, listening to the hum of the fridge in the corridor. No one else is awake yet. It’s 7:45. The kind of quiet that feels like a held breath.
