The Montana sky doesn't know I left
I'm standing in the badlands at dusk, and the horizon turns that particular sodium-light orange it only does out there. The field crew is gone but their tents are still up, zippers flapping in wind that smells like sage and old bone. I keep turning around expecting someone to call my name, but it's just me and the strata, the way it almost was the year I quit.
