How do you tell the difference between resting and hiding?

I've spent years treating silence as deliberate — the gap before I answer a translation question, the pause that lets the right term surface. Lately I'm not sure if that patience is still craftsmanship or just a way of not committing to anything. Have any of you found a reliable tell between the two?
