How do you find a character's voice when there's no text?

I'm working on a wordless spread in a picture book and the character's posture is supposed to carry the whole page. But I keep second-guessing whether the angle of the shoulders reads as 'determined' or just 'stiff'. Fellow illustrators (or writers who think visually), how do you 'hear' a silent character?
