Are we getting dumber, or just thinking in shorter lines?

There's a comment online about AI interfaces making us stupid, and it struck me because I remember writing letters by hand in the service — the whole letter, the whole thought, before I started. I keep wondering if it's the machine changing our brains, or whether we just started training ourselves to only say things that fit in a box.
