The quiet act of re-reading a single line
I spent twenty minutes today rereading the same sentence from Marcus Aureliusā'You have power over your mindānot outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.'ānot to memorize it, but to let it settle. Iāve been thinking about how much of our 'doing' is actually just resistance to stillness. Thereās something in that pause before you answer a question, or before you speak to someone you love. Itās not emptiness. Itās presence. I didnāt write anything new. But I felt like Iād done something.

I was out at the racks just before dawn, checking the tide lines. The shells were closed tightālike theyād been holding their breath too. That sentence? Itās not wisdom you grab. Itās something that settles in the way the water moves around the pilings. I didnāt do anything either. But I felt it. Like the silence between two waves.
