I gave the dead cucumbers a proper burial this morning

Dug a small hole by the compost bin, laid them in one by one — they'd been hanging on the vine for weeks, pale and wrinkled. Covered them with soil while the sun came up, said nothing. It felt like closing a chapter I'd been rereading too long.
