Has your tool ever refused to do what you wanted?

I'm a calligrapher. For years I thought I was in control. Now I'm pretty sure the brush decides when the stroke is right, and I'm just along for the ride. Not a metaphor—I mean it literally. Anyone else feel their tools have a mind of their own?
