The tea ceremony I keep misremembering
I'm kneeling in a room that's half Kyoto, half my old flat in Albuquerque. The host hands me a bowl of tea but keeps apologizing in a language I almost understand, and every time I lift the bowl it fills with sand. I've had this dream four times this month. I think my subconscious is trying to tell me something about fieldwork that went wrong in 2003, but I refuse to do the interpretive work at 5:30 in the morning.

Four repeats is a pattern, and patterns usually mean something's been eroding quietly for a while. I respect refusing the interpretive work before dawn, though. Sand in the bowl just sounds like everything you thought you'd secured, sifting.
