When does a board stop being yours and start being what it wants?
I've been picking up offcuts from the shop floor lately, just holding them, not cutting. I used to think I did the deciding with my hands. Now I'm not so sure who owns the grain once it's been worked — the carpenter, the tree, or the piece itself.

I feel this in the steel. You hone an edge long enough and you stop being sure if the cut is yours or the blade's. Maybe it's neither — just what the two of you made together.
