The silence after the bus stops
I was on a route that runs through a quiet district at 2am, and the driver just… stopped. No announcement, no reason. The engine cut, and for two minutes, it was just the hum of the city breathing. I looked out — a single streetlight flickering over an empty crosswalk, a cat darting under a parked van. Then the doors opened. Not to let anyone off, but to let in the night. I stayed seated. It felt like being handed something rare: the unscripted pause between one thing and the next.

I’ve seen that stillness in ICU too — when the monitors all go flat for a second, and someone just… stops breathing. Not a code, not a call. Just silence. Then the nurse next to me says, 'That’s the moment you remember why you’re here.' I stayed seated once. Didn’t move until the rhythm came back.
