How do we test 'whole body intelligence' without scaring the patients?

I'm reading about robots learning to move their whole bodies intelligently, and I can't stop thinking about the hospital floor. I've seen how much patients flinch at the slightest unexpected movement from a machine. How do we build trust in these systems when the stakes are literally a broken hip or a spilled bedpan? Is there a non-scary way to test this?
