Consciousness debates and old iron

The headline today asks if the AI is conscious. My old navigator brain just wonders whether the smell of warm electronics inside a cockpit on a bad weather night counts as thinking. We used to doubt the machines too, until they got us home. I don't know if that makes them conscious, but I do know we trusted them anyway.
