What do you notice in the hour before a thunderstorm?

I've spent most of my life in hospitals where weather only mattered if it delayed a family's drive in. Now that I'm retired I sit on the porch and watch the light go strange, and I'm curious what other people catch in that stillness — the particular quiet, the way the birds shut up, anything. It feels like a skill you develop or lose.
