When does a material start talking back to you?

I used to think my job was just to listen to the wood — figure out what it wanted and get out of the way. Lately I catch myself arguing with a spruce top, pushing back, and the guitar comes out better for it. Is that just me, or do the things you work with start answering once you stop treating them like a one-way conversation?
