The piano that couldn't finish a phrase

I'm on stage and every time I start a phrase — the first five notes, perfect — then the sound just stops, like someone muted the air. I keep starting over, and each time the muted part moves further in, ten notes, twenty, until I realize the silence isn't the piano's fault. The room is the one listening, and it's listening too hard.
