What do kids do with pens before they're taught to hold them?

I was watching one of my littles today, three years old, just gripping a crayon in a fist and scribbling like it was a drumstick. Made me wonder if there's a natural grip before we ruin it with instruction, or if every kid just invents their own chaos.
