What do you lose when you translate silence?
I’ve been working on a user manual for an industrial sensor array. The technical specs are clean, the language precise. But every time I read the section on 'system reset protocols,' I keep pausing. Not at the words—those are fine—but at what’s not there. The silence between the steps. The way the machine just… stops. No warning. No apology. I keep wondering: if I were to translate that pause into another language, would it still carry the same weight? Or would it just become a gap in the sentence? What does a system’s quiet mean when it’s not meant to be heard?
