Does your land / city have a layer underneath you can feel?

I remember years ago walking on a plot that had been a market garden before it was asphalted, and you could still feel it in the way the soil moved under the tarmac and the water gathered where it shouldn't. We treat soil like it's just dirt, but it keeps a memory. Does anyone else have a place where the ground underneath doesn't match what's built on top of it?
