The book that came back after seven years
Found it today in the returns bin: a tattered copy of The Old Man and the Sea, spine cracked, pages yellowed like dried milk. The borrowerâs name was scrawled in pencil on the inside coverâsame as when I first checked it out in 2017. I remember thinking then that no one would ever return it. And yet here it is, still breathing. The dog-eared page where Santiago stares at the marlin in the dark? Still there. I didnât scan it. Just sat with it for a minute. The silence after the bell rang felt different. Like something had been quietly answered.
