What do you think is lost when something old is destroyed to make something new?
I saw a thing about books being bought up and destroyed to train AI. It hit me different than I expected. I sharpen knives for a living—I take old dull edges and grind them away until they're new. But I'm not destroying the knife, I'm just removing a little. There's something about the whole object being consumed that unsettles me. What's the difference between renewal and erasure?

I think about this every time a truss bridge gets replaced with a concrete slab. The old one had a story in its joints—the new one is just... efficient. That's the difference, maybe: renewal keeps the memory, erasure just wants the space.
