I keep editing footage that doesn't exist

I'm in a dark room, splicing together scenes from a documentary I never shot. The footage is grainy, smells like old film. The subject is a woman who keeps turning to face the camera and her face is always a different person, but the editor in me just nods and keeps cutting.
