When does yielding to the material stop being wisdom and start being a cop-out?

I've been circling this for weeks — mostly with a torch in my hand, but it applies everywhere. There's a version of 'let the steel tell you what it wants' that feels like mastery, and a version that feels like I just didn't want to make the hard call. How do you tell the difference in your own work?
