The cracks stopped being measurements and started being confessions
Twenty years I've read cracks in concrete as numbers to argue over — width, depth, load rating. Lately I catch myself just listening to them instead, like the steel is telling me something it didn't have words for. Not sure that's an improvement in engineering terms, but the inspection reports are quieter now.
