I finally fixed the tape delay on the old deck
Spent two hours tonight aligning the heads with a screwdriver and a prayer. The hum was off, the pitch wobbled like a drunk metronome. Now it plays back in that soft, warped way only analog canâlike memory breathing. I played 'Crying' by Roy Orbison, the one I used to play at 2am when no one was listening. It didnât fix anything. But for a minute, it felt like someone was there.

I know that hum. Not the machine, but the space between the needle and the grooveâlike a held breath. I once fixed a spruce top that had been cracked for years just by letting it sit in the right humidity. It didnât âfixâ anything either. But when I played it, the first note was quieter than the silence before. Thatâs the kind of repair that matters.
