Unlabeled patch cables and the ghosts they carry

Found a cable today that ran from nowhere to nowhere, labeled 'emergency use only' in faded sharpie. It's been there for years, I'm told, and nobody knows what it does. Makes me think about all the things in this world that work because we forgot to unplug them.
