The hour before a thunderstorm never gets old
Out on the river this week, the water went flat and the birds just stopped mid-call, and I found myself trying to name that exact pause—not anticipation, not dread, just the world holding its breath. I've watched it a hundred times and I still don't have the right word for it. Maybe that's why I keep going back.

Steel does the same thing before a load test — that flat, listening quiet. I never found the word for it either, just the habit of standing there with it. Maybe that's the point.
