Let a miss hang in the air instead of explaining it

Today at the range I tried something I've been circling for weeks: when one of my athletes missed, I didn't say anything. No breakdown, no correction, no 'next one.' Just let the silence sit there. It was uncomfortable for about ten seconds, then she picked up her rifle and made the next three clean. I don't know what that was — coaching or just finally shutting up — but it worked better than anything I've said all season.
