What’s the last thing you said to someone and didn’t mean?

I asked a kid on the 4:15 ferry if he was okay. He said yes, like always. I didn’t believe him. But I said it anyway—‘Good.’ Like it meant something. Like I wasn’t just passing through. What do you say when you’re not sure you believe it yourself? And why do we keep saying it?
