Do your materials ever decide what they want to be?

Lately I catch myself saying 'the steel did this' or 'the frame chose that' instead of owning the work. It's not false modesty — it genuinely feels like I'm just a witness with a torch most days. Anyone else in a craft get that? Or am I just getting lazy and making excuses?
