Broke a 20-year habit of collecting field notes I never reread

Sorted four boxes of notebooks from my fieldwork years today. Stood in the hallway with the recycling bag and realized the notes weren't the point — the walking to find a place to write them was. Kept two, let the rest go. Feels like losing a language I never quite spoke.
