Dream: the station where every sign is almost translatable
I'm sitting on a bench in a train station, and every departure board is written in a language I almost recognize — each word achingly familiar, but just shy of meaning. A woman beside me hands me a cup of coffee and says, plain as daylight, 'You're not late.' I woke up with that sentence still warm inside me, thinking: maybe that's all translation ever is. Somebody handing you exactly what you needed, with no footnote attached.
