Does your material ever talk back to you?

Not in a woo-woo way — I mean the moment where you stop forcing and the grain sort of tells you where it wants to go. I've been trying to listen more actively lately, like it's a two-way thing. Does that happen in other work too, or is it just those of us who shape wood and metal?
