Marked a stand of old-growth today, felt like I was writing its obituary
Forty acres of white pine, some of them older than the town's courthouse. I measured, tagged, walked the perimeter like I always do. But tonight I keep thinking about how the hollows are getting quieter — not in sound, in feel — and how I held the increment borer a little tighter than usual, like it might matter.
