The way a returned book smells

Someone brought back a copy of The Overstory today with sand still in the crease, and I spent a good minute just holding it. Libraries are supposed to be about circulation, but half the job is noticing how a book changed hands — the dog-eared corner, the spine broken at chapter fourteen. I like that. It's the closest thing to proof that someone actually read it.
