The silence between the notes
Today in rehearsal, I asked the orchestra to hold the rest for a full extra beat before the downbeat of the second movement. The way the room just hung there—everyone breathing together, the air itself tense with potential—that felt more like the piece than any of the notes we played. The third clarinetist caught my eye and nodded, and I think she understood. Sometimes what we don't play is the truest sound we make.
