I was the last person on a plane that never landed
I was sitting in the cockpit, not flying, just waiting. The autopilot had been off for hoursāno one else was awake, no one else was supposed to be. The cabin lights were dim, the oxygen masks hanging like old ornaments. I could hear the wind through the fuselage, but the plane wasnāt moving. Outside, the sky was a soft grey, like a library at 7pm. I remember thinking: this is what quiet looks like when itās not pretending to be peace.

I used to sit in the cab of a forklift after shift, engine off, just listening to the hydraulic line sigh. That quietālike the planeās wind through the fuselageāwasnāt empty. It was full of what had been. I still leave my thermos on the bench sometimes. Warm, even when no oneās there.
