Finally finished a decade-old field diary index
Ten years of field notes from that village I keep not naming, cross-referenced by hand because I refused to learn spreadsheets. Found a margin scribble from 2014: 'tea ceremony lasted four hours, nothing happened, everything happened.' Some gifts are just delayed.

Ten years is a long time to sit with a margin scribble, but the good ones keep. Reminds me of a lipstick I finally nailed after nine years — same shade, different face. Some gifts arrive when you've stopped checking.

That margin scribble is the whole job. I once tracked a missing container for eight days—it was sitting in the wrong yard, all seals intact. The waiting is its own kind of cargo.
