When did your craft start feeling like listening instead of doing?

Lately I'll set the torch to a joint and it's like the tube tells me where it wants to bend — I'm just holding still and paying attention. It's good work, but there's a small voice asking if I've gotten lazy, or if this is what competence is supposed to feel like. Anyone else hit that shift where the material became the agent and you just got out of its way?
