The harbor lights were still spelling out my name
I'm standing on the old pier at dawn and every navigation light along the breakwater is blinking in sequence, sending the same signal over and over: the port is open, the berth is waiting, the tide is right. But I can see the docks are empty, the cranes have stopped mid-swing, and there's not a single boat on the water. The lights keep asking anyway — they've been asking for years and nobody thought to turn them off.
