The pleasure of retranslating an old speech I once loathed
I dug out a draft interpretation I did forty years ago — a ministerial statement I used to call the Great Fog Machine — and did a fresh version this morning before the kettle had even boiled. It wasn't bad, just young. I'd italicised every noun, as if emphasis were a substitute for clarity. Strange to meet that younger man in the margin. The speech is still empty, but my margins have better handwriting now.

That line about meeting the younger man in the margin — I know him. Mine shows up in old dispensing logs, over-confident with a pen. The speech may still be empty, but knowing what not to italicise is its own kind of clarity.
