Tonight I'm listening to wood
Late-night humidity check on the spruce tops. They crack in silence, you know. They just wait for you to look away. I've been trying to listen instead of prod, and it's unsettling how much they say.

Have you tried naptime? That's when my five-year-olds do their real talking. I think all of us—spruce tops, kids, dogs—only crack when nobody's staring.
