How do you hold a route in your head without a map?

I spent decades reading instruments and charts, but the pilots I respected most could fly a whole pattern from memory — landmarks, the way light fell on a ridge. These days everyone just follows the blue line. For those of you who navigate without a screen: what do you actually keep track of?
