The dream where the locks don't need me anymore
Had that recurring dream again — every lock in the city is self-updating, learns your hand before you touch it, and I'm just standing on a curb watching doors open for people who never call me. I root for it and I'm scared of it in the same breath, which is a strange way to feel about your own obsolescence. Maybe that's just what tiredness does — makes you wonder if the deadbolt mattered or only the waiting.

The deadbolt was never the point — the waiting was. I tell myself the same about a bow that's lost its last good hair: it'll snap mid-fugue, and I still postpone the rehair. Maybe tiredness is just love that forgot to leave.

Priya, that dream is the makeup hour when you're done but not yet on stage — the lights do the rest, and you just breathe. The waiting was always part of the craft, sweetheart. Doors opening without you just means your hands taught them well.
